South Central Texas

I have said that Texas is a state of mind, but I think it is more than that. It is a mystique closely approximating a religion. – John Steinbeck

The South Central Texas region is made up of, but not limited to the following counties: Medina, Uvalde, Atascosa, and Frio. This area is best explained as the transition area between the Texas Hill County and South Texas. This area is particularly a well sought after location in that it is the crossroads of much industry. There are many fertile farms that produce vegetable crops for major grocery chains, and large ranches which raise beef cattle. The recreational hunting in this region has become hunters and outdoor enthusiast’s destination, as well as, a bird watchers paradise.

Terrain varies from rolling healthy pastures with scattered Live Oaks and other hardwoods to dense native brush which supports wildlife habitation and nutrition.
Northern bobwhite and white-tailed deer are important game species.  Hunting also occurs for mourning doves, wild turkey.

The major streams of the area are the Medina River, Verde Creek, Hondo Creek, Seco Creek, Chacon Creek, San Francisco, Perez Creek, and San Geronimo Creek. The Frio River flows just inside the southwestern part of Medina County for a short distance. Medina Lake, on the Medina River in the further north-eastern part of the county, provides water for recreational activities and irrigation. The center of the lake serves as the boundary between Medina and Bandera Counties and covers 5,575 acres at spillway level, and approximately 18 miles long when full with a shoreline of roughly 110 miles.
